AskQuest ("we", "our", or "us") provides a browser extension and associated backend API that help users summarize online content. This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use and share it, and the choices available to you.
By installing or using the AskQuest extension or interacting with the AskQuest backend, you agree to the collection and use of information in accordance with this Privacy Policy.
1. Information We Collect
We collect the minimum amount of information required to deliver the summarization service:
- Page Metadata: When you trigger a summary, the extension sends the active tab's URL, document title, and meta description.
- Content Snapshot: Depending on your action, the extension may send the visible text and/or HTML of the page to the backend so that summaries can be generated (e.g., for JavaScript-rendered pages or when you paste a URL manually).
- User Inputs: Any text you manually enter into the extension (for example, custom text you would like summarized) is transmitted to the backend for processing.
- Diagnostic Logs: The backend records standard web server logs (request timestamps, IP address, user agent, HTTP status codes) to detect abuse, troubleshoot issues, and maintain service reliability.
- Clipboard Interactions: If you use the copy-to-clipboard feature, AskQuest receives the text you ask it to copy. We do not retain clipboard contents after the copy operation completes.
We do not intentionally collect personal identifiers such as your name, email address, or payment information through the extension. If you contact us, we will collect the contact details you provide so we can respond.
2. How We Use Information
We use the collected information solely to:
- Generate the requested summaries and deliver results back to the extension.
- Improve accuracy and reliability (e.g., measuring response times, detecting repeated failure scenarios).
- Protect the service from abuse, fraud, and security threats (e.g., enforcing rate limits, blocking malicious URLs).
- Comply with legal obligations.
We do not sell, rent, or lease your data to third parties.
3. Sharing With Third Parties
We share information only with the following categories of recipients:
- Infrastructure Providers: We rely on reputable hosting providers to run the AskQuest backend and store transient logs.
- Model Providers: Summary generation is performed with large language models provided by OpenAI, LLC. Page text or snippets you submit for summarization are transmitted to OpenAI's API as part of the summarization workflow. OpenAI processes this data in accordance with its own terms and does not use it to train models unless you have separately opted in with OpenAI.
- Compliance and Legal Requests: We may disclose information if required to do so by law or in response to valid legal process.
We require all third parties to handle your data securely and use it only for the limited purposes described above.
4. Data Retention
- Content Payloads: URL, text, and HTML payloads submitted for summarization are processed in memory and discarded after the response is returned, unless a failure requires short-term retention for debugging. When debugging is necessary, data is retained for no more than 7 days.
- Server Logs: Diagnostic logs are retained for up to 30 days to monitor service health, enforce rate limits, and investigate abuse. Aggregated, non-identifiable analytics may be retained longer.
- Support Records: If you contact us, we keep the correspondence for as long as needed to assist you and maintain records of our communications.
5. Security
We implement industry-standard security measures, including HTTPS transport, input validation, SSRF protection, rate limiting, and access controls to safeguard the information handled by AskQuest. No system is completely secure; we therefore cannot guarantee absolute security, but we work continuously to strengthen our defenses.
6. Your Choices
- Extension Permissions: You can revoke extension permissions or disable/remove the extension at any time via your browser settings.
- Content Sharing: You control when the extension sends content to the backend. If you do not want a page summarized, do not trigger the summarization action.
- Clipboard Usage: The copy-to-clipboard feature operates only when you request it.
- Do Not Track: The service does not currently respond to Do Not Track headers because it only processes data you explicitly submit.
If you would like us to delete diagnostic logs that may include your IP address, contact us (see Section 8) with sufficient detail to locate the data in question.
7. Children's Privacy
AskQuest is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with information, please contact us so we can delete it.

9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes in functionality, legal requirements, or operational practices. When we make changes, we will update the "Effective Date" above and, where appropriate, notify you through the extension or our website. Your continued use after the updated policy becomes effective means you agree to the revised policy.
